CHARACTER INFO
Name: Zero
Canon: Mega Man X
Age: At least a century old chronologically (created early 20XX, lives to 21XX by X8)
History: http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Zero
Canon Point: One year after sealing himself away in X6 (though he does so after the events of X7, X8, and Command Mission)
Personality: Zero is a Maverick Hunter, an individual who fights Mavericks, Reploids who have been infected with and succumbed to the Maverick Virus. He conducts himself decisively and with skill, showing no mercy to anyone he perceives as his enemy, especially the Mavericks he's charged with eliminating.
When he was first found, Zero was a farcry from who he is now. He was little more than a mechanical equivalent of a wild beast who craved destruction. When he was found and awakened in the ruins of the lab he was created in, he immediately killed everyone present, and destroyed the entirety of the elite Gamma unit after being cornered. It wasn't until Hunter Commander Sigma had fought him that his rampage was ended, but even then Sigma didn't win without severe injuries. The resulting battle changed Zero's personality for the better, though neither would know at the time that their fates were forever exchanged.
Zero seems cold and emotionless to those who don't know him, though for the most part, this isn't who he is. He can actually be a nice person to be around. He is fairly sociable for his general demeanor, known to talk to his old friend X the most out of anyone. He even had friends in Colonel and Iris, the latter of whom he had developed deeper feelings for. It can take some time, but he can warm up to others over time, as shown from his first interactions with Axl.
When in battle, Zero puts forth his all when fighting the enemy. He rarely hesitates to strike the target, and he does so with great strength. Time and again, Zero has face many a foe, small or large, without the slightest trace of fear. When confronting the enemy, Zero will often even engage in a short conversation before fighting his target.
For his skill and strength, Zero shows great modesty. He views X as the superior Maverick Hunter between the two of them. Zero even considers his friend a hero, while he doesn't call himself by such a title. Despite so, he often displays a tendency to sacrifice himself for the sake of others, and will always act if he should see someone in need. He also displays a complete distaste for the deaths of the innocent.
Even though he fights against those who have been infected with he Maverick Virus, Zero himself is infected with the same virus. Except instead of causing him to lose his mind and attack anyone and everyone, it has been what's kept him sane since his fateful fight against Sigma, and can even become more powerful from the stronger variation, the Sigma Virus. Though, for the good the virus has done for Zero, it has caused him just as much, if not greater pain. Through infecting others, he has been forced to fight those he once considered allies or even friends, including, through Sigma's manipulation, Colonel, and even his love, Iris. Just the trauma of killing Iris in battle weighs heavily on his mind, causing his cold facade to solidify, and for him to question what he was fighting for.
Despite, or perhaps because of the hardships he's faced, Zero ultimately decided one thing: that he would keep fighting. This is something he told X once when confronted with the fact that old Reploids like them were outdated compared to the next generation of Reploids. That they would have to keep fighting, not just against Mavericks, but against their destiny as well.
A great warrior with a wounded soul, Zero is one who will always protect the innocent, and never stop fighting. Not until everlasting peace between humans and Reploids is realized.
Abilities/Powers/Skills: Being a Reploid (technically a Robot Master, but still), Zero can already do many things that even humans at their peak condition cannot do. Accounting for what all he CAN do, he is essentially a one machine army that is by no means easy to take down.
Super Strength/Endurance: Being a machine, these are a given. Zero is capable of lifting individuals and objects several times his own size and weight, though exactly how much has never been shown or stated. In X8, he was shown wielding the Sigma Blade (a weapon with a wide blade that's longer than he is) with one hand as though it was his regular Z-Saber, and the only single weapon he was shown needing both hands for was the T Breaker (a large hammer capable of breaking shields with a single strike). With even normal Reploids being stronger than humans, I'd surmise that Zero would be able to move about four tons of weight, five at most for an upward limit, under normal circumstances.
As for endurance, Zero's body is made of an alloy called Titanium Z, which, considering titanium's properties, makes him very resistant to corrosion in many substances, including sea water, chlorine, and even aqua regia. And being an alloy, it also lends itself as exceedingly powerful armor to Zero while being lightweight. Traditional weapon fire from regular firearms (i.e., a handgun using normal bullets) would have little to no effect against Zero, often necessitating armor-piercing rounds, or more traditionally for his time, energy weapons. Even then, a single hit is often never enough to even slow him down, being able to get back up from most attacks and keep fighting, even if a normal machine would've effectively stopped functioning.
Teleportation: While not actually used FOR battle, it can allow Zero to enter a combat zone near-instantaneously, enabling him to engage the enemy FASTER than if he traveled by foot. In games, it's speculated that he and X (and later Axl) don't just simply warp to the respective boss chamber of each stage because either the Mavericks in question have the forethought to jam the area they're in so that the Hunters have to fight their way in from the edge of the jamming field, or, in some cases, it's implied they may need to defeat the weaker enemies on the way to reduce civilian and military casualties.
Enhanced Movement: Strong jets in the soles of Zero's feet allow him additional mobility on the ground and in the air. They allow him to dash short distances at roughly 2-3 times his normal speed, dash in midair, even gain an additional jump while airborne. In addition, Zero has the ability to scale walls via wall-jumping, either against a single vertical surface or between two.
Close-Range Combat and Weapons Expert: Zero's main method of dealing with foes is fighting them within range of melee attacks. While he does have his Zero Buster, he will almost always get in close and attack with his signature weapon, the Z-Saber. His attacks with the Z-Saber are strong and fast, and with techniques he can learn through combat, it is often a mistake to underestimate him with his sword in hand.
Mega Man X7, X8, and Command Mission have shown that the Z-Saber isn't the only weapon that Zero can utilize. X7 and X8 in particular show Zero wielding weapons other than a variety of sword during gameplay, including the D-Glaive (a lance with longer reach than his iconic weapon), V-Hanger (twin kunai that can strike faster than the Z-Saber), B-Fan (a pair of fans that can deflect projectiles), T-Breaker (a heavy but powerful hammer able to break shields and barriers in a single strike), and the K Knuckle (a pair of brass knuckle-style weapons allowing Zero access to several hand-to-hand combat techniques). X8 and Command Mission even show that the Z-Saber isn't the only sword that Zero can use, CM in particular giving him access to both a rapier and a katana, neither of which are energy-based like his Saber (though due to gameplay, he uses both pretty much the same as he would his normal weapon). With this in mind, I speculate that as long as he can hold or use a weapon, he can learn how to fight with it.
Learning Ability: An ability that is entirely unique to Zero, this is one of the things that make him so powerful. After fighting a strong opponent, Zero has the innate ability to learn at least one of his opponent's signature attacks, and closely replicate it for his own use in future combat. The attacks he can learn from another can range from a simple punch that has a lot of force put into it, to attacking with an elemental blade, to even energy based attacks like his Rakuhouha. Even if the technique he learns isn't an actual attack, he can still replicate it if it would be within his ability to perform it. In line with his additional weapons is X7 and X8, his ability to learn attacks could also be how he can utilize equipment other than his Z-Saber.
In addition, some material from X5 and games after X8 seem to hint that Zero can learn techniques on his own either mid-battle or without fighting someone prior. An example of this is his strongest attack, Genmurei (Phantasm Zero). Neither it nor a similar attack was ever used against him, but in battle with his Awakened state in X5, he can learn this technique on the fly to defeat X if you take too long. And in Command Mission, he learns two additional Command Arts after using the techniques in his Action Trigger 300 and 999 times respectively. This taken into account, while for the most part the X series aren't RPGs, Zero himself does become progressively stronger as he fights, thereby allowing him to grow as a fighter.
Special Items:
Zero Buster: Zero's initial weapon before gaining his Z-Saber, it has been with him at all times, despite rarely ever seeing much use in recent years. Like X's X-Buster, it is a chargeable cannon that is embedded into Zero's arm. While its overall power and capability have been downgraded over the years in favor of the Z-Saber, the Z-Buster remains a dependable weapon should Zero have need of a distanced attack. In addition, charging energy into it is how Zero is able to perform his Giga Attacks, though he doesn't have to change his hand into the Buster to release the attack.
Zero Saber: Zero's weapon of choice, the Z-Saber is a powerful energy blade that has been with him since first being repaired from a state of being dead. Zero is able to use it to deadly effect either on the ground or in the air, dealing powerful slashes that can rip apart normal enemies. Using it as a focus for techniques, Zero can deal devastating damage in a multitude of ways, from a simple slash combo to enveloping the saber in an element for added damage, like fire, ice, or electricity. Long as he holds his Z-Saber, Zero is certain to win most any battle he gets into.
Durga Glaive: A naginata-style lance weapon that Zero wields. It's blade is shorter than the Z-Saber, but the Glaive more than makes up for it, providing 2.5 times the reach that the Z-Saber gives. Being an altogether different weapon than the Z-Saber, the D-Glaive gives Zero a myriad more attacks he can perform, as well as several techniques that differ from Z-Saber variations.
Bashou Fan: A pair of battle fans, the B-Fan offer high attack and defense capabilities. A primary function is their ability to deflect projectiles while Zero is standing still. He can also send projectiles back to their source by attacking them, thanks to his Zekkyoudan (Broken Mirror Severing) technique. Along with their defensive abilities, they can strike the enemy quite fast.
Titan Breaker: A super-powerful hammer. The T-Breaker boasts such weight and power that it can break enemy barriers with ease, typically with just a single strike. A drawback of this weapon is, of course, the weight. The T-Breaker is so heavy that even Zero needs both hands to use its full strength. Even then, attacking normally is a slow matter, as it is swung slower than the Z-Saber. This weapon is best used against either large/slow or stationary targets.
Kaiser Knuckle: A set of weapons modeled after brass knuckles, the K-Knuckle is a strong weapon that allow Zero to use his fists to devestating effect. While using them does require him to get closer to the enemy than he would with even the B-Fan, they are as strong as the T-Breaker without the weight, though lacking the ability to break barriers that his other weapons possess. The techniques utilized by the weapon mainly encorporate powerful punches and kicks.
Extra:
- Since Zero is patient zero for the Maverick Virus, he unknowingly spreads it wherever he goes. He constantly spreads it, and always will, even after death. This in mind, I myself won't do or state anything that the Maverick Virus is taking effect on any mechanical beings or electronics. I will solely leave that up to the decision of the appropriate muns. (This is just something that I came across while doing the appropriate research for Zero's application, and I felt that it would hold significance. If you don't even want this being implied, I will strike it from the form without a fight.)
- Preventing the spread of the Maverick Virus is the reason why Zero sealed himself away at the end of the X series (his ending in X6). It was stated that he would wake up from his slumber in 102 years. Given that this is the first of two times he's put into a suspended slumber, and his original body would be stolen by Dr. Weil at the height of the Elf Wars (which would have been WELL in the middle of the 102 years) while in this suspended state, there is no way that his sealing himself could've happened immediately after the events of X6, otherwise, he would not have been around (outside of cameos, perhaps) for the last 3 X-series titles (X7, X8, CM). As well, his body is subjected to experiments related to treating the Maverick Virus over a period of 50 of the 102 years, at which point it is X who uses the resulting cure (the Mother Elf) to restore all remaining Mavericks to normalcy, wiping all traces of the virus, and Sigma, from existence. The point I bring Zero in from is just one year after beginning his slumber, which is way before the Sigma anti-body program would've possibly been conceived, as well as before any point that Zero would be free of the virus. (I've played all of the games before, and did the appropriate research while revising my application. I am certain that the information I have provided is correct. If you do not want the implication that the Maverick Virus can affect robotic characters or electronic instruments (the decision of which I 100% leave with the appropriate controllers of the character or device in question), then I shall remove this from the application without further trouble.)
